Crossrail station rebuilds underway in Ealing

Crossrail will bring huge changes to Ealing and signs of progress are now being seen at stations before services begin in 2019. This site will take a look at life around Ealing and the change underway as transport upgrades change the area. They’ll be looks at new housing developments, shops and restaurants in the area.

Work at West Ealing is well underway to move the station building from above the tracks. This is where a new station entrance will be located on Manor Road:

When complete the station will include:

  • A new station footbridge with lifts and stairs connecting the platforms to the station building providing step-free access from the street to all platforms
  • Longer platforms to accommodate 200 metre long Crossrail trains
  • A new bay platform for Greenford Branch trains by widening platform 4
  • A new canopy for Platform 4.

The station is very popular at about a million users a year but services are still more akin to a sleepy backwater. Services are infrequent after 9:30pm and there’s no Sunday service, which is very odd in a fast growing area of London.

I may be wrong but I think some later evening trains have just begun but they are still very sporadic. Services from Paddington to the station are 4 an hour until around half 9. Then the new electric trains to Hayes and Harlington stop running.

Services on the route to Hayes only begun in January and will extend to Maidenhead in a few months but why do they stop at half 9?

One result of changes in early January was that direct trains from Greenford to Paddington ceased. Greenford services are now truncated into a shuttle between West Ealing and Greenford. Here’s the new platform for these services:
